three-dimensional analysis of bearing capacity of square footings on convex slopes by finite element method

چکیده
soil slopes are sometimes curved in plan rather than being straight. this curvature, especially when it is convex, decreases the bearing capacity of the slope. finite element methodhas been used here in this research to investigate the reducing effect of curvature on bearingcapacity of a slope. failure of soil has been assumed to be according to mohr-coulomb criteria;but the flow rule of the soil has been considered unassociated. both cohesive and frictional soilshave been used in these investigations to observe the effect of soil type on the problem.investigations consist of four types of cohesive soils having different strengths and four types offrictional soils having different friction angles. the finite element model consisted of a squarefooting adjacent to a slope that is convex in plan. besides changing the curvature; the slope angleand the footing to slope distance have also been varied to see their effects as well. based on theresults of these investigations it has been concluded that convex curvature generally reduces thebearing capacity and this effect is more pronounced in steeper slopes. while this reduction islimited to 7% in case of cohesive soils it can be as high as 15% in case of frictional soils.therefore this effect should be considered in design of slopes that are convex in plan.

Seismic Bearing Capacity of Strip Footings on Pile-Stabilized Slopes
This paper develops an analytical method to calculate seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing, which is located on a slope reinforced with rows of pile. The resistance of passive pile is determined based on normal and shear stress of the soil around the pile, which is then compared to other analytical methods. This comparison indicates an acceptable agreement. The variants of the study incl...

the problem of a footing on slope is encountered regularly in engineering practice, with some noteworthy examples being bridge abutments and basement excavations. in this paper, the bearing capacity of a footing replaced near a slope crest was studied. model tests were carried out using square model footing of 100 mm width. a tank 0.3 m deep, 0.6 m wide, and 0.9 m long was used for the model be...
متن کاملBearing Capacity of Strip Footings near Slopes Using Lower Bound Limit Analysis
Stability of foundations near slopes is one of the important and complicated problems in geotechnical engineering, which has been investigated by various methods such as limit equilibrium, limit analysis, slip-line, finite element and discrete element. The complexity of this problem is resulted from the combination of two probable failures: foundation failure and overall slope failure. The curr...
